Namo Buddha is the third holiest Buddhist site near the Kathmandu Valley — quieter and more contemplative than Swayambhu or Boudhanath, set on a high ridge where Himalayan winds carry an almost tangible serenity. This is not merely a monument but a memorial to an act of selfless love that defines the Buddhist spirit.
Here, in a previous lifetime, the young prince who would become Lord Buddha encountered a dying tigress who had just given birth. Too weak from hunger to nurse her newborn cubs, she lay fading. Without hesitation, the prince offered his own body — his life — to give her strength.
As he lay dying, the tigress's eyes brightened and her milk returned, saving her cubs. It is a story of extraordinary compassion that still resonates across the centuries, and this hillside is its keeper.
Travel from Kathmandu to Namo Buddha, the third holiest Buddhist site. Explore the sacred stupa, the legendary sacrifice cave, and Thrangu Tashi Monastery. Enjoy serene surroundings, Himalayan views, and a scenic return journey.
After breakfast, your private A/C vehicle arrives at your hotel promptly at 8:00 am. We collect guests from all hotels inside the ring road, including the Boudhanath area.
The drive takes you out of the valley and up into the peaceful outer hills — a journey that itself feels like a gradual leaving-behind of the everyday world.
Arrive at Namo Buddha's high ridge, where the great stupa rises above the terraced hillside. Unlike the busier sites of the valley floor, this place breathes quietly. Wander the garden pathways, take in the sweeping panorama of the Himalayan peaks stretching north, and let the natural serenity settle over you.
Your guide shares the full legend of the young prince and the tigress, bringing centuries of devotion vividly to life.
Your guide leads you to the cave where the young prince made his extraordinary offering. Step inside and feel the weight of the story in the cool stone silence. From there, enter the celebrated Thrangu Tashi Monastery — a vibrant centre of Tibetan Buddhist learning and practice.
Observe the richly painted prayer halls, towering Buddha statues, and monks going about their daily rituals.
Enjoy a relaxed lunch on-site before beginning the scenic drive back down to the valley. Your private vehicle returns you comfortably to your hotel, arriving around 4:00 pm — completing a full day that offers history, spirituality, natural beauty, and profound stillness in equal measure.
