James Sissom and Ashley Schmieder, a couple from Northern California, embarked on an extraordinary journey to fulfill their dream of getting married near Mount Everest, the highest mountain in the world.
Their adventure began with a shared passion for exploration, kindled during their first date, an overnight hiking trip in Yosemite National Park.
What started as a love for the outdoors eventually turned into a once in a lifetime experience, a wedding after an 8 day trek to Everest Base Camp in Nepal.
For many trekkers visiting Nepal’s Everest region, the journey to Everest Base Camp (EBC) is already a life changing adventure. For James and Ashley, it became the place where they celebrated their love.
Ashley was inspired by Jon Krakauer’s famous mountaineering book "Into Thin Air," which tells the dramatic story of climbing Mount Everest.
In James, she found a like minded adventurer who was ready to tackle any challenge.
Despite uncertainties and the extreme conditions of the Himalayan mountains, the couple remained determined to make their Everest wedding dream a reality.
Their decision to marry in the Everest region of Nepal was not made lightly. Months of preparation followed, including physical training, trekking preparation, and acquiring specialized gear that could withstand the harsh conditions of the Everest Base Camp trek.
With the help of adventure wedding photographer Charleton Churchill, the couple’s vision slowly began to take shape.
After considering various destinations, Mount Everest became the clear choice, a symbol of their shared love for adventure travel and trekking in the Himalayas.

As their wedding day approached, James faced a serious obstacle.
He began suffering from asthma and altitude sickness, a common issue for trekkers at high elevations in the Everest region. At one point, it felt as if he could barely breathe, raising concerns that the ceremony might have to be canceled.
Fortunately, with the help of their experienced guide and oxygen treatment, James recovered enough to continue.
This moment highlighted one of the biggest realities of trekking in the Himalayas. Preparation, proper acclimatization, and professional guidance are essential when traveling to high altitude destinations like Everest Base Camp.
On the day of their wedding, the couple stood together at approximately 17,500 feet above sea level, surrounded by the stunning landscape of the Himalayan mountains.
With only a small group of witnesses, they exchanged heartfelt vows and sealed their union with a kiss.
